Exploring the World Through the Classroom

The representation and appreciation of other cultures is very important within education. It helps to create, respect, and opens students eye to the world in which we live. We also strive to create an equal learning opportunity including those from different racial, ethnic, and social class-groups.

There are many dimensions to multicultural education, and in every way they are very important. We start off by listing them; content integration, the knowledge construction process, prejudice reduction, and equity pedagogy, and an empowering school culture and social structure.

Important Dimensions of my Philosophy

When teaching a lesson about another culture it is important for the educator to be aware of the lesson at hand. We can use content integration by using examples and other content from the culture being studied. We illustrate important key concepts that will go hand in hand with the lesson and the project. We must teach the importance of the cultural identity or object that we are creating. We look at the example of the dream catcher as a key chain, that does not fairly or even correctly resemble where it is supposed to be place nor the concept of purpose the object has. The point of a dream catcher was to capture bad dreams from children and keep them "in the net" while the dangling pieces would "drop" good dreams in their minds. Using these when teaching is important to correctly resemble the object at hand. Teaching the content through integration is very important.

Another dimension that I find extremely important is the prejudice reduction dimension. Through this we as educators can better describe lessons and the activities to create a positive outlook toward different racial, ethnic, and cultural groups. We find frequently that other students of other ethnicities, races, or even social structures don't understand, and have negative attitudes towards these groups. While teaching these subjects of multicultural unity we can help students develop a stronger connection to one another and a positive intergroup attitudes when the teaching conditions exist.

These conditions include positive images of the ethnic groups in the materials and the use of multiethnic materials in a consistent and sequential way.

Taking Action

It also is important that the school Is supportive and encourages teaching in ways that facilitate academic achignvemt of students from different racial, cultural, and social class groups. Within the classroom I find it important that we need be increasing cooperative teaching actives rather than competitive one. We need to come together in order to make a change, so getting rid of the competitive teaching styles help to bring the class closer than ever. It teaches them to respect ideas, themselves, and others.

There are many goals that you can set within the classroom, but the important goals of the multicultural education is to assist students to "achieve the knowledge and commitments that is needed to make proper decisions and to take personal, social, and civic actions to promote democracy and democratic living". When students are taking action it gives them a chance to develop a sense of personal and civic efficacy. Through projects and lessons of multiple cultures we can continue our work and help develop positive thinkers within our contemporary society.
