Classroom Management
In My Class
I believe that classroom management is a necessity in the academic educational setting. The students must be surrounded in a safe, inclusive, and open space to develop into strong members of society. In doing so, students must take control and reflect on their actions rather than punishing all the time for their behavior. To student to behave we must set expectations in the beginning. I continuously find that creating an engaging curriculum aimed at the students’ needs and wants including all my students gets them to their academic goals. Creating a welcoming environment encourages all students to question, decide, and learn about topics in class therefore contributing to their learning and understanding. This is very important to me, without a safe welcoming space students would not be able to develop and learn.
With the development of creating a safe and welcoming space knowing names, pronouns, and other nicknames is a quick way to connect with students and start the development of the environment off right. I believe that meeting needs of everyone is a vital part of my classroom, leading to the ideas of discussions and experimentation with projects. Discussion and process/final critiques are frequent practices of assessment in the classroom, these activities lead to students developing common social skills that will be needed later in life. I want to use these sections to increase encourage students to communicate with one another and discuss what they think during participating discussions. Students developing opinions and growing in observation is an important implement in the classroom.
Entering my room students will be intrigued by paintings that I have done on the wall along with other students' work. My plan is to have each graduating senior paint a backsplash on a brink near the sink areas in the back of my room. There will be an exciting sense of wonder in the room that will spark creativity. I will display painting posters of a contemporary master working in today’s world. I believe that it is important to showcase the diverse variety of art this world has to offer, from powerful craftsmen to strong painters, to show the idea that each artist has something to share. Moving to the set-up of the student’s section, I would have the long tables in a “U” shape to create a dynamic where everyone can see each other and be open to sharing when discussions and critiques come around.
My classroom in a high school would showcase respect as its number one rule. I find that when everyone is respected, we can use spaces to our advantage. Not needing any other rules is found important if we keep a safe environment and are developing our skills while remaining focused. Regarding foods in the classroom, I will allow gums and water to be in the classroom. Food I will not allow it due to the distraction and noise, if students must eat, they may do so before class. Food in the classroom while drawing or painting or even working in ceramics can create unwanted messes, and the possibility to ruin projects causes students to restart. I will address these rules right away at the beginning of the semesters of each new group. I also like the idea of having these things written down to create a class constitution, having these ideas on paper and signed by each student holds them accountable for their actions.
As I have stated earlier, I find classroom management to be a necessity in the academic educational setting. I like to create an atmosphere where each student feels safe and welcomed to participate. I wish to create an atmosphere that facilitates learning and includes all students in the class. I find that the most important part of classroom management in my classroom is the building of respect we have for one another teacher and students both. Encouraging students to respect one another while encouraging each other in the classroom. I set high expectations of respect in my classroom while using my curriculum to create a free open environment that limits outbursts and problems right from the get-go.
